Math for
Game Designers
On July 18–19, 2024, we had the opportunity to present our work at the Board Game Research Meeting, held at the University of Milan. This international conference brought together scholars, educators, designers, and professionals to explore board games as tools for education, culture, and social engagement.
Our contribution focused on demonstrating how mathematics can play a central role in all stages of board game development, not just in familiar areas like game theory or probability, but across a wide range of mathematical disciplines. Through concrete examples, we illustrated how a deeper integration of mathematical concepts can enhance game mechanics, foster innovation, and open new creative pathways for designers. The presentation also reinforced our commitment to making these ideas accessible to a broad audience, including those without a formal background in mathematics.
The event featured a rich program of discussions and workshops, highlighting the growing recognition of board games as meaningful mediums for learning and cultural expression.
